Yumbe is a province at the North-East Part of Uganda. Yumbe Hospital a Rehabilitation of the existing buildings for hospital support departments and construction of new buildings that will integrate the main hospital facilities – OPD, Emergency, Blood Collection and Laboratory, Radiology, Operation Theater, Labor and Wards. The project also includes the rehabilitation and new construction for staff accommodation.
With a strong emphasis in local construction techniques and materials, the project is a tribute to the local architecture with a contemporary approach. The extensive use of the clay brick and the small openings in between them, gives the buildings its unique character and plasticity, highly enhanced by the sun movement. A highly efficient Operating Theatre and Labor is prepared for complex interventions, that could only be performed before in central Hospitals of the country.
An exercise of budget contention without sacrificing international standards in healthcare, this project makes extensive use of renewable energies, passive solar solutions, natural ventilation and light, in order to achieve the most comfortable and safe environment in a country where access to electricity is rare and expensive.
